India - special case: sphere of influence -> protectorate -> colony -> restored independent nation
During the 18th century the Mughal Empire was coming to an end and, at the same time British trading and presence was increasing. Great Britain would influence trade, culture, land, and government. Eventually they conquested India's southern coast, Ganges Valley, Delhi, and subdue all remaining states with military dominance. The East India Company, now completely controlled by the British, would became a focal point in trade with textiles, spices, and other goods. Britain also eradicated any French presence. At first the Brits took over by using powerful Indian Princes like puppets but then disposed of the Princes placing themselves in power. Now were then dependent on the Sepoy, Indians who worked for the Brits. But India was treated more like a work force than a nation and was now claimed by Great Britain even though its past empire was just as large and complex as its conquerors. In the next two centuries revolutions would be very important and Civil rights movements during WWII would demand India's independence from Britain. At first the Brits were reluctant to leave because of the extreme religious tension between Hindus and Muslims, and when they left India separated into two nations, known today as Pakistan and India. Today India is known as a place of poverty, over population, and rapidly and/or over industrialized nation for the pace of its people, which makes it an example of the negative effects of past imperialism.
